It is so helpful to read of the experience of someone who made it through a struggle with the emotions associated with a serious illness and how it affects the family and the ill person. The author has given an incredibly important gift to the world by this recounting of "A Life Put on Hold." While this is the story of a growing child, it would also greatly benefit family caregivers who struggle managing elder family members with dementia. A Life Put on Hold My Son Journey with Brain Injury and the Lessons I've Learned Along the Way Evie Rosen 9780692253496 Books Reviews
5 Stars Plus for 'A Life Put on Hold'!
I read this book hoping for insight into personally dealing more effectively with our own family challenges. I never expected to be so drawn into the emotion, love & commitment of an extraordinary woman for her son & her family.
I felt every bit of the frustration and anger that Evie wrote about as if I was going through it with her and honestly wanted to throttle some of the doctors & educators she had to deal with.
I was so connected to her story that I did not want to put it down & regretted that I finished it in two days.
I wanted a sequel immediately as if it was fictional instead of a real 'Life on Hold'.
For me the book was so much more than the helpful lessons learned & shared, it was a wonderful story of people I wanted to see successful & happy.
Evie Rosen has written a painful and yet candid insight into living with a child with brain injury that resulted from a rare disease called Moyamoya. Her persistence in advocating for her child to navigate the medical and school systems to meet his needs, and the many obstacles she faced, make her a hero in my eyes. Her son’s surgery, mixture of drugs and their side effects forced her to live out her fears, often resulting in violence as well as heartbreak.
Ms. Rosen’s book perfectly describes the challenges her son faced, as well as the profound effect it had on her family and their mental health. This is a must read book for anyone who is dealing with a child, relative or friend who suffers from brain injury, or has other special needs.
I just spent the entire day reading this book and it was fantastic. I thought I would go outside and catch a little sun and read a chapter or two and I would get on with my day and that did not happen. I went from beginning to end and enjoyed every single sentence. Evie is an extraordinary writer and so clearly and concisely told this story in a way that could be felt, understood and remembered. And, the flow was just perfect.
The lessons at the end of each chapter can be generalized out to anyone having to deal with the uncertainty of life...I am not going to be a spoiler! Get this book and read it. You will be so glad you did!
Author! Author!
This book was a journey for the author and it is a journey for the reader. Anyone who has been a caregiver for a child with special needs or an adult who develops dementia type symptoms later in life will find this ringing a bell as the author works her way through the system for her son.
Each chapter ends with the "lesson" learned from the experience described. My favorite examples follow.
"My lesson Life continuously throws curveballs. You have to learn when to duck, because if you don't, it's really going to hurt.I realized that those around us really wanted to help and believed for whatever reason, that they had more or better information than we did. I understand it now but at the time I wanted to pull my hair out."
"My lesson I now realize that the things we resist the most....are the very things that take us past our fears and help us heal."
A good read. A story well told with struggles we all go through in some way or another.
A must read for any family with a special needs member. When you think you are going through hell, Evie Rosen is there to hold your hand and light the way out.
Weather you have a child with special needs or know someone who does. .. you'll want to read this heartfelt, amazing journey into the world of a Mother who never gave up on her Son and his rights in the special needs world. Bravo Evie Rosen . ...You are a Hero!
